NINFA: This magical garden lies in the valley of the Ninfa River, not far from Rome. Although its setting is an abandoned medieval village, the garden was created in the 20th century. The micro-climate is mild just suitable for plants you might find in a romantic English garden. These pictures were taken late afternoon in April.

VILLA D'ESTE: In a small town outside of Rome, this Renaissance garden was built on a hillside for Cardinal Ippolito D'Este. It has over 500 fountains, and recently the remarkable "Birdsong", the water organ, was restored. It plays music 3 times a day.

DUMBARTON OAKS: In the Georgetown area of Washington DC, this garden, designed by Beatrix Farrand, hearkens back to an Italian hillside garden. There was a temporary installation of thousands of Swarovski crystals hanging from a metal mesh, called "Rainbow Cloud," when I visited in 2012. The stone garden ornaments and iron gates are exquisite.
